Nature’s Reset

Awakening from her slumber, it was time for the next survey. The Mother of Nature spread her wings and flew across Earth’s abused surface. Her emerald eyes were tearful as she took note of the once-perfect terrain. Hues of dusk and dawn rushed across her face in the wake of strong emotion.

“What have they done?”

Her voice thundered loud as bolts of lightning besieged the skies around her. Memories of 50 years prior flashed through her mind. Submitting her findings to the Council of Planets, she had begged for another reset.

“They’ll destroy everything!” she’d told them. But they had denied her request in lieu of giving the human species one last chance.

Her flowing hair of vibrant colored vines stretched out behind her as she gained speed, noting every polluted river, steam and lake. Peering through the waters, she could see countless forms of biological life. They were all struggling. Their numbers had diminished in such a short time. The suffering was unbearable for her as tolerance reached its limit.

She whispered to her children,”Hide.”

Diving deep through the soiled ocean waters, she spoke to the plates. “Shift hard and release pressure that you’ve been holding back.” As she emerged, she saw the land violently roll and shake. Buidlings were leveled coastal, and inland.

With a heavy heart she yelled, “Again!”

Volcanoes erupted as earthquakes raged. One by one, she destroyed oil rigs, refineries and drill sites. Earth’s belly opened to swallow the jets, cars and boats. For too long, humans had ignored her warnings. No longer would she allow their selfishness to poison her domain.

Hovering over the vast seas, she coaxed the tides high into the air and issued the next command. “Roll fiercely in every direction. Show no mercy at landfall.”

The winds were directed to organize, move inland and lay waste to everything in their path. Hurricanes surged ashore to rip through cities and scatter their debris. Tornadoes spawned and circled the planet, dismantling every representation of greed and corruption.

On the heels of the winds came rain. It fell heavily, washing clean the regions of dense population. Human structures would no longer litter the land, forcing her children from their homes.

After the cleanse, the sun shone bright to dry the ground and hasten the return of balance. She summoned her hiding offspring. It was time to reclaim what rightfully belonged to them.
